Pure Heart, Answered Prayer Series
Today’s Lesson: “Keep It Clean”
Scriptures: Matthew 15:11; Proverbs 4:23
“A man is not defiled by what goes into his mouth but by what comes out of it.” Berean Bible; “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” KJV Proverbs 4:23
Question: How do you keep a pure heart so you can have answered prayer? Answer: Watch what you see and what you hear. Those two things will affect how you speak - what comes out of your mouth - and how you act or react to people and situations. Jesus said in Matthew 15:11, that it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles us, it is what comes out of our mouth that defiles us. So, if you will allow me to speak comparatively, it is not what you see with your eyes or hear with your ears that defiles you, it is what comes out of you - your heart - that proves whether or not you have been defiled or that your heart is not pure. Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23.
For example, we cannot spend hours hearing and watching things offensive to God and have a pure heart connected to Jesus for answered prayer. On the other hand, we cannot always control what we see and hear at all times. For example, unless you work in a pristine Christian environment - which most people do not - you can expect to see and hear a lot of ungodly, unholy, not-so-pure stuff. But, because we should be constantly praying (Ephesians 6:18) and we should be studying our Word (2 Timothy 2:15) those things are not going to pollute our spirit. Prayer and the Word will purge the unclean things out of our spirit and promote our hearts to a pure relationship with God. Thus, when we pray, we will have answered prayer. [Actually, prayer and the Word should keep us from engaging in negative things over which we do have control (negative social media, television, or music), but that’s another whole lesson.]
So, watch what you see and hear, as much as it is in your control. Stay in the Word and pray constantly and consistently and you will support and promote a pure heart.
We could certainly write much more about this, but for now this is enough to digest and think on for the coming week.
